R-22 Refrigerant Loop Hole

Posted on: February 9, 2012

The Federal government mandated that new air conditioning and heat pump units be manufactured with a refrigerant other than R-22 as of January 1, 2010. One thing the government did not anticipate was the manufacturers making new units and not putting any refrigerant in the units. They are designed to operate on R-22 and the installer must supply the R-22 when installing the unit. The reason these are manufactured is to that a complete system does not need to be installed if the air handler is in good shape. If you chose to install a R-22 condenser this way, instead of replacing the entire system, the unit must be made by the same manufacturer as the existing air handler and be an approved match by the manufacturer. The approved match is necessary to ensure the system will operate at proper capacity and efficiency and is required by the building department.
