Where does the Mercury go?
The majority of thermostats in use right now are the older style “mercury bulb” thermostats. There is a mercury switch encased ina glass tube used to turn the heating and air conditioning on & off. New digital thermostats do not contain mercury bulbs, they utilize printed circuit boards. When an old-style mercury thermostat is replaced, it should not be just thrown in the trash. It should be taken to local hazardous waste collections points, or commercial hazardous waste companies. As a heating & air conditioning contractor, proper disposal of hazardous waste is extremely important. Proper disposal is critical to the environment and our generations to come. Ask your service technician what he does with his old thermostats.
