Why are There Wires on the Drain Line?

Posted on: February 9, 2012

Years ago when a condensate drain plugged up on your air conditioner it usually created a mess, with water going everywhere, damage to rugs, wood floors, drywall, and even ceilings. Newer air handlers have two drains outlets, a primary drain and a secondary drain. If the primary drain clogs up the water will come out of the secondary drain, which is mounted higher up. Jacob Heating & Air Conditioning installs a PVC safety float switch in the drain system. The float switch is wired into the low-voltage circuit, and shuts the entire system off if there is a water blockage. A service call may be required, but condensate drain problems are usually a small repair and the shut-off switch saves a huge mess.
