Heat Pump Defrost Cycles

Posted on: December 1, 2011

With heat pump operation during the winter months, it is normal for the outside condenser coil to drip water and temporarily become iced over during lower outdoor temperatures. Periodically the unit will go into a defrost cycle. In defrost, the outdoor fan stops but the compressor continues to run. A valve automatically reverses the flow of refrigerant to pump hot refrigerant through the outdoor coil. After a few minutes, when the unit comes out of defrost, the fan starts back up and a cloud of steam may fly from the unit! Don’t be alarmed! It’s all normal operation. We have factory trained service technicians that can keep your unit working at peak performance. Call us today for an appointment. Check with us about all your filter needs.
