My Heat Pump is Smoking!

Posted on: December 1, 2011

During colder weather, a heat pump goes through a defrost cycle in order to de-ice the outdoor coil. When this de-icing takes place the outdoor fan stops running but the compressor continues to run for approximately 15 minutes. During this time, the backup heat strips in the indoor unit automatically come on. The first time this happens in the winter, you may smell some dust burning off the heat strips. When the outdoor unit comes out of defrost mode, you may see steam coming from the unit, and water around the base of the unit. Don’t worry, this is normal operation. However, if you notice that the outdoor coil is iced up and doesn’t go into defrost for an hour and a half, you may have a problem. Check with us about all your filter needs.
