What Type of Filter?
The idea of air filtration on air conditioners was originated to keep the evaporator coil clean. Many old central heating systems had no filters, because it was thought to serve no purpose. Now the primary reason people are so interested in air filtration is for air quality purposes. There are a variety of filters available for heating and air conditioning systems. Spun fiberglass, with is the least expensive, probably does the least in keeping the air and your equipment clean. Using these filters may cost you more money in the long run. What dirt the filter doesn’t catch is caught by the evaporator coil. Trying to cool your home with a dirty evaporator coil increases your electric bill. You can avoid an expensive coil cleaning by using a good, premium filter. A polyester filter costs a little more but will save you money in the long run. Also, letting your filters get too dirty, or double filtering can cause additional problems. Several types of whole-house electronic filters are available for better air quality control.
